What's on Your August 2024 Reading List?

It's a new month, I have another list...

August To Be Read Books

The Books I've Shortlisted for My August Reading 2024

July slowed my reading down so much, we're having a new sofa and there's been lots of furniture disposal, decorating and other crazy antics which have meant I just haven't had the time to dedicate to my reading.

I'm hoping for a little more relaxed August and much more reading! So, let's dig into the little pile of books I've collected for my August 2024 reading pile.

The Library Book

Divergent - Veronica Roth

I can't quite believe I've never actually read these books, so when I saw them at the library I decided it was time!

"For sixteen-year-old Tris, the world changes in a heartbeat when she is forced to make a terrible choice. Turning her back on her family, Tris ventures out, alone, determined to find out where she truly belongs.

Shocked by the brutality of her new life, Tris can trust no one. And yet she is drawn to a boy who seems to both threaten and protect her. The hardest choices may yet lie ahead…."

Borrowed Audio Book for the Month

Murder by Candlelight - Faith Martin

My current loan from the Borrowbox App. Check out your local library to see if they are using this, it's great for eBooks and Audio Books too!

Little bit of a different vibe for me this month, but I do love a little murder mystery!

"The Cotswolds, 1924. At the Old Forge in the quiet village of Maybury-in-the-Marsh a cry of anguish rings out: lady of the house Amy Phelps has been discovered dead. But with all the windows and doors to her room locked from inside, how – and by whom – was she killed?

Arbuthnot ‘Arbie’ Swift finds himself in the unlikely position of detective. The celebrated author of The Gentleman’s Guide to Ghost-Hunting is staying at the Old Forge to investigate a suspected spectre, but now the more pressing matter of Amy’s murder falls to him too.

With old friend Val, he soon uncovers a sorry tale of altered wills, secret love affairs and tragic losses – and plenty of motives for murder. When events take another sinister turn, Arbie must find the killer, fast. And to do so will mean cracking a most perfectly plotted crime…"

Borrowed eBook For The Month

Growing Things - Paul Tremblay

Growing Things - Paul Tremblay

I've also got this book from the Borrowbox App, and I've repurposed an old tablet as my dedicated library e-reader!

I loved the film very of Cabin at the End of the World, so I have high hopes for this collection of short stories.

"See a school class haunted by a life-changing video, the forces at work on four men fleeing the pawn shop they robbed at gunpoint, the meth addict kidnapping her daughter as the town is terrorized by a giant monster, or the woman facing all the ghosts who scare her most in a Choose Your Own Adventure.

Intricate, humane, ingenious and chilling, embrace the Growing Things."

Our Book Club Pick for the Month

Throne of Glass - Sarah J Mass

Throne of Glass - Sarah J Mass

Our Fantasy & Horror Book Club pick for August we are starting what may be a large spiral into the Massverse with Throne of Glass by Sarah J Mass. All while we wait for our Iron Flame hangover to be cured!

"In a land without magic, an assassin is summoned to the castle. Celaena Sardothien has no love for the vicious king who rules from his throne of glass, but she has not come to kill him. She has come to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three murderers, thieves, and warriors in a deadly competition, she will be released from prison to serve as the King's Champion.

But something rotten dwells in the castle - and it's there to kill. When her competitors start dying mysteriously, one by one, Celaena's fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival - and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world, and the people she has come to love."

My Audible Listen

Heir of Fire - Sarah J Mass

Sticking with my own journey through the Throne of Glass series...

"Celaena Sardothien has survived deadly contests and shattering heartbreak, but now she must travel to a new land to confront her darkest truth. That truth could change her life - and her future - forever.

Meanwhile, monstrous forces are gathering on the horizon, intent on enslaving her world. To defeat them, Celaena will need the strength not only to fight the evil that is about to be unleashed but also to harness her inner demons. If she is to win this battle, she must find the courage to face her destiny - and burn brighter than ever before."

My Kindle Read

King's Cage - Victoria Aveyard

While I wasn't as keen on the second book in the series as I was the first, I'm going to see this series through.

"Mare Barrow is a prisoner, powerless without her lightning, tormented by her mistakes. She lives at the mercy of a boy she once loved, a boy made of lies and betrayal.

Now a king, Maven continues weaving his web in an attempt to maintain control over his country - and his prisoner.

As Mare remains trapped in the palace, the remnants of the Red Rebellion continue organizing and expanding. As they prepare for war, no longer able to linger in the shadows, Cal - the exiled prince with his own claim on Mare's heart - will stop at nothing to bring her back.

Blood will turn on blood and allegiances will be tested on every side. If the Lightning Girl's spark is gone, who will light the way for the rebellion?"

My Re-Read

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - J K Rowling

Because there are always going to be books that leak into your soul and you're going to read them over and over... The Harry Potter series will always be on my re-read lists... and we try again for this month!

"Dark times have come to Hogwarts. After the Dementors' attack on his cousin Dudley, Harry Potter knows that Voldemort will stop at nothing to find him. There are many who deny the Dark Lord's return, but Harry is not alone: a secret order gathers at Grimmauld Place to fight against the Dark forces. Harry must allow Professor Snape to teach him how to protect himself from Voldemort's savage assaults on his mind. But they are growing stronger by the day and Harry is running out of time..."

Finally - The Work Reads

The Ritual Effect - Professor Michael Norton

I always have a couple of books on my list to help me dive deeper into topics that I'm working with or that I'm making content about. Here are this months books!

"In this ground-breaking and inspiring guide, a renowned Harvard psychologist demonstrates how turning everyday habits into rituals can improve our work, our relationships and our lives.

Think of the quirky traditions that you keep up with your friends.

Or the unusual ways that you and your family mark special occasions.

Or the gifts that your partner gives – and what you’d think if they’d bought the same for an ex.

These are rituals: practices that are imbued with symbolic meaning. And they have the power to turn black-and-white moments into technicolour."

The Complete Guide to Yin Yoga - Bernie Clark

"All forms of yoga can provide benefits physically, emotionally, and mentally, however Yin Yoga works the deeper levels of the body/heart/mind: the yin tissues of fascia, tendons, ligaments, joints and bones, as well as the energetic channels of the meridians, nerves and blood system. One big difference noticed by students of Yin Yoga is the long-held, passive nature of the posture, which gives time for a deeper journey to unfold, a journey into the meditative aspects of yoga, a bridge to living life mindfully."

Are you adding any of these books to your TBR?
