What's on Your May 2024 Reading List?
It's a new month, I have a list...
The Books I've Shortlisted for My May Reading 2024
Well, we in the UK are really not getting much of the outdoor reading weather right now are we? I'm hoping for more sunny mornings in May! I can't wait to get stuck in this month with some good reads.
I didn't quite get through the whole April list, and I had to switch things around to get a couple of my library books read and returned too. It's certainly been a lesson in flexibility and patience as I've had to put a couple I really want to read on hold a little!
So let's get back on track (hopefully), and here is what I have planned for May!
The Zodiac Pick for the Month
I've not managed to finish this one, but I am halfway through and moving fast... and I'm loving it!. I'm listening to this one on Audible.
"In a land without magic, an assassin is summoned to the castle. Celaena Sardothien has no love for the vicious king who rules from his throne of glass, but she has not come to kill him. She has come to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three murderers, thieves, and warriors in a deadly competition, she will be released from prison to serve as the King's Champion."

Borrowed eBook for the Month
My current loan from the Borrowbox App. Check out your local library to see if they are using this, it's great for eBooks and Audio Books too!
"Medusa's Story...
Medusa is the sole mortal in a family of gods. Growing up with her Gorgon sisters, she begins to realize that she is the only one who experiences change, the only one who can be hurt.
When Poseidon commits an unforgiveable act against Medusa in the temple of Athene, the goddess takes her revenge where she can: on his victim. Medusa is changed forever – writhing snakes for hair and her gaze now turns any living creature to stone. She can look at nothing without destroying it.
Desperate to protect her beloved sisters, Medusa condemns herself to a life of shadows. Until Perseus embarks upon a quest to fetch the head of a Gorgon . . ."
I love fairy tale retellings, but I love ancient myth retellings just as much.
Borrowed Audio Book For The Month
I've also got this one on audio book from the Borrowbox App, I'm deep in my retellings phase right now!
"Welcome to the Forest of Good and Evil, where villains may be heroes and heroes may be villains…it all depends on who you ask.
In the realm of Enchantia, creatures of legend still exist, magic is the norm, and fairy tales are real.
Raised in the human world, Everly Morrow has no idea she’s a fairy-tale princess—until she begins to commune with mirrors. Soon, a horrifying truth is revealed. She is fated to be Snow White’s greatest enemy, the Evil Queen.
With powers beyond her imagination or control, Everly returns to the land of her birth. There, she meets Roth Charmaine, the supposed Prince Charming. Their attraction is undeniable, but their relationship is doomed. As Everly faces disasters and betrayals, giving in to her wicked side proves more tempting. Can she resist, or will she become the villain she was born to be?"
Our Book Club Pick for the Month
Our Spiritual Book Club pick for May has us diving into Belonging, Remembering Ourselves Home.
"Feel like you don’t belong? You’re not alone. The world has never been more connected, yet people are lonelier than ever. Whether we feel unworthy, alienated, or anxious about our place in the world — the absence of belonging is the great silent wound of our times.
Most people think of belonging as a mythical place, and they spend a lifetime searching for it in vain. But what if belonging isn’t a place at all? What if it’s a skill that has been lost or forgotten?
With her signature depth and eloquence, Toko-pa maps a path to Belonging from the inside out. Drawing on myth, stories and dreams, she takes us into the origins of our estrangement, reframing exile as a necessary initiation into authenticity. Then she shares the competencies of belonging: a set of ancestral practices to heal our wounds and restore true belonging to our lives and to the world."
The Library Book
Voyage of the Damned - Frances White
I was going to read this one later in the year, but it needs to go back to the library so it got a little bump up the list!
"For a thousand years, Concordia has maintained peace between its provinces. To mark this incredible feat, the emperor's ship embarks upon a twelve-day voyage to the sacred Goddess's Mountain.
Aboard are the twelve heirs of the provinces of Concordia, each graced with a unique and secret magical ability known as a Blessing.
All except one: Ganymedes Piscero – class clown, slacker, and all-round disappointment.
When a beloved heir is murdered, everyone is a suspect. Stuck at sea and surrounded by powerful people and without a Blessing to protect him , Ganymedes's odds of survival are slim.
But as the bodies pile higher, Ganymedes must become the hero he was not born to be. Can he unmask the killer and their secret blessing before this bloody crusade reaches the shores of Concordia?"
My Kindle Read
I'm behind on my kindle reads, so I'm only half way through this one but I've committed to this one as being the first one I finish in May!
"When the world’s best magicians are offered an extraordinary opportunity, saying yes is easy. Each could join the secretive Alexandrian Society, whose custodians guard lost knowledge from ancient civilizations. Their members enjoy a lifetime of power and prestige. Yet each decade, only six practitioners are invited – to fill five places.
Contenders Libby Rhodes and Nico de Varona are inseparable enemies, cosmologists who can control matter with their minds. Parisa Kamali is a telepath, who sees the mind’s deepest secrets. Reina Mori is a naturalist who can perceive and understand the flow of life itself. And Callum Nova is an empath, who can manipulate the desires of others. Finally there’s Tristan Caine, whose powers mystify even himself.
Following recruitment by the mysterious Atlas Blakely, they travel to the Society’s London headquarters. Here, each must study and innovate within esoteric subject areas. And if they can prove themselves, over the course of a year, they’ll survive. Most of them."
My Re-Read
Because there are always going to be books that leak into your soul and you're going to read them over and over... The Harry Potter series will always be on my re-read lists... and we try again for this month!
"For twelve long years, the dread fortress of Azkaban held an infamous prisoner named Sirius Black. Convicted of killing thirteen people with a single curse, he was said to be the heir apparent to the Dark Lord, Voldemort.
Now he has escaped, leaving only two clues as to where he might be headed: Harry Potter's defeat of You-Know-Who was Black's downfall as well. And the Azkban guards heard Black muttering in his sleep, "He's at Hogwarts...he's at Hogwarts."
Harry Potter isn't safe, not even within the walls of his magical school, surrounded by his friends. Because on top of it all, there may well be a traitor in their midst."
Finally - The Work Reads
