Updated: May 13

What I read and which was my favourite read of April?

What I Read in March 2024

I've really enjoyed my reading this month, I feel like I have read some really good books and I've loved it, let's dive into the books I read in April 2024.

I rate my books from 1-5 and my "ratings" look like this...

5 - Absolutely Obsessed - Reserved for the books I'm adding to my will re-read forever list

4 - Loved it!

3 - Really enjoyed it

2 - Meh, was ok I guess

1 - No - Only reserved for books I couldn't finish

Always remember that ratings are just my personal opinion and have no reflection on the actual book. Let's go!

The Books I Read in April 2024

The Mermaid - Christina Henry

My Rating - 4

I really loved this book, I'd been reading a few Little Mermaid retellings lately and I thought this would be another...

But I was pleasantly surprised with it being a blend of the classic mermaid tale, mixed with the Fiji Mermaid and the world of P T Barnum.

My favourite quote

“Humans often valued what they should not, she reflected, and most often they did not value what was right before their eyes.”

Amelia was a great main character, I loved the way she was not going to even try to fit into society and the way that humans think or live.

The Watchers - A M Shine

My Rating - 4

Oh my days this book!

I love a bit of mythology and loved how this book integrated Irish myth into a pretty spooky read.

The idea of being trapped in the woods with unseen forces watching your every move is unsettling in itself, and the twists in the story had me desperate to get to the end to find out where it would end!

Favourite Quote

“Suppressing a smile isn’t easy. The happiness always creeps out somehow. But sadness can be stashed under the skin like a dark secret.”

The Cloisters - Katy Hays

My Rating - 3

I wanted this to be more about using the Tarot more than it was...

However, it was a really intriguing story about ambition and desire. I really liked the journey of finding the origins of the Tarot.

The last few chapters had me sat open mouthed and shocked, I hadn't expected that ending at all.

Favourite Quote

“What if our whole life—how we live and die—has already been decided for us? Would you want to know, if a roll of the dice or a deal of the cards could tell you the outcome? Can life be that thin, that disturbing?”

Moon Spells - Diane Ahlquist

My Rating - 3

This is a really good moon manifesting book for those who like to go all out with their rituals and spells.

A good guide to break out when there's a specific spell you want to cast.

Favourite Quote

“anticipation and the preparation are all part of the process of creating what you want and bringing it to fruition.”

The Woman In Me - Britney Spears

My Rating - 4

It's heart breaking to read a story like this, but for this to be her lived experience... it just shows how evil celebrity culture can be, that industry can be, but for her own family to become that evil it astonishing, honestly.

Favourite Quote

“There have been so many times when I was scared to speak up because I was afraid somebody would think I was crazy. But I’ve learned that lesson now, the hard way. You have to speak the thing that you’re feeling, even if it scares you. You have to tell your story. You have to raise your voice.”

Raise your voices, always.

Legendborn - Tracy Deonn

My Rating - 4

I loved this book so much more than I was expecting to, the King Arthur legend woven into this world was just so good and the ending caught me so off guard!

I can't wait to learn more about this world and the magic system, and what happens with Sel... I liked Nick, but Sel was the clear best character throughout.

I connected so much with Bree and her grief throughout, it was so well written.

Favourite Quote

“I recognize that sound. It's the sound of holding on to a cliff by the edge of your nails. The sound of barely containing a pain so immense that to look at it, to raise your own flesh and examine what's beneath, is to risk falling into a darkness you know you'll never escape.”

The Cruel Prince - Holly Black

My Rating - 4

This book was so much fun, a human in Faerie just trying to belong to something. But nothing and no one is what they actually appear to be, including Jude!

I love a good morally grey character and almost everyone in this book is simply trying to position themselves into more power. I loved how this story developed and how crazy things get!

Favourite Quote

“I am going to keep on defying you. I am going to shame you with my defiance. You remind me that I am a mere mortal and you are a prince of Faerie. Well, let me remind you that means you have much to lose and I have nothing. You may win in the end, you may ensorcell me and hurt me and humiliate me, but I will make sure you lose everything I can take from you on the way down. I promise you this is the least of what I can do.”

Sea - Sarah Driver

My Rating - 1

I wanted to like this, but I just couldn't get into it at all. I wasn't keen on the writing, which may have been the reason I was struggling to connect in any way to the characters. I'm sure it's great, but just not for me at the moment!

Are you adding any of these books to your TBR?
